Homebiotic started as a partnership between Steve K, an environmental engineer and building science expert, and Dave Asprey, a successful entrepreneur and 3-time New York Times bestselling science author. They each have a passion for health, and have worked together to bring Homebiotic technology to the market.

In 2006 Steve discovered a specific blend of soil-based bacteria that has a unique ability to restore the natural microbial balance in an environment. Years of overuse of chemical cleansers have stripped away the beneficial microbes that naturally form a healthy balance in our homes and other surroundings. This growing imbalance has led to many problems including musty odors, mold growth, and other symptoms known as “sick building syndrome”. Steve termed this new technology “Environmental probiotics”.

Dave had numerous health challenges throughout his life, and his early business success during the dot-com boom afforded him the ability to “hack” his biology to save his own health – and in the process, creating the new field of biohacking.

In 2012, Dave was doing a keynote presentation at a US Green Building Council conference, on the topic of how buildings affect the health of their occupants. As part of this presentation, he told the story of his multiple exposures to mold and lamented the fact that we used to have an environment which passively defended us against mold — before we started over-sanitizing our homes.

Steve, one of the organizers of the conference, was sitting in the audience and thought back to his work with soil microbes and realized that a bacterial spray, aka a “probiotic for your home” could help alleviate the symptoms often associated with mold exposure Steve and Dave met, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Homebiotic first launched in 2015 under the Bulletproof brand, but quickly became a company of its own. Homebiotic’s unique formulation restores a natural bacterial balance to a space to create a protective barrier that helps keep surfaces cleaner at a microscopic level and works to prevent the causes of grime and musty odors.

Homebiotic is based near Seattle, Washington.
